Worlds get names

Every world in the galaxy used to be called after its type. Now it has a name of its own — and if you own it, you can change it.

Until this week a planet was called what it was made of. Every arid world in the galaxy answered to “Arid World”, which was fine on a survey report and useless everywhere else: a fleet heading out read Arid World → Arid World, and a colony roster read like a geology index.

Worlds now carry names. Ashfall, Wellspring, Thistledown, Ironmoor — a hundred and sixty of them, handed out when the world is charted and stable from then on. Two neighbours in the same system will never share one.

What you own, you can name

A world you hold is yours to rename, from the planet panel. Two characters minimum, thirty-two maximum, and nothing that would break the line it is printed on. Nobody else can rename your world, and nobody can rename an unclaimed one — you take it first, then you name it.

Coordinates went where they belong

The position used to be glued onto the name, which meant the top bar printed the system twice and no screen could show a clean label. Coordinates are their own field now: fleets in transit still tell you exactly where they are going, the name just is not carrying that weight any more.

Existing worlds were renamed in place. If you had already named one yourself, it was left alone.
